SAX/CLARINET

FLUTE/ PICCOLO
Jean Hutchinson has been teaching at Mel Owen Music for over twenty-five
years and has been a member of the music faculty at Bellarmine University
for seven. She has a Bachelor’s degree in flute performance
and a Master of Arts in music history, both from the University
of Louisville. Additionally, she has pursued post-graduate flute
studies with Robert Cavally, the Cincinnati Symphony, Walfrid Kujala,
the Chicago Symphony, and Katherine Borst Jones. Ms. Hutchinson
is a free-lance musician who performs in a wide variety of solo,
ensemble, and orchestral venues in and around Louisville. In addition,
Ms. Hutchinson conducts the Panpipes Flute Choir, an ensemble open
to any of her private students who are advanced sufficiently to
participate.
TRUMPET
Jerry Amend, principal trumpet of the Louisville Orchestra, has
been teaching at Mel Owen since 1988. Mr. Amend is currently on
the music faculty of Indiana University Southeast, and his previous
teaching positions include posts at the National Music Camp, Bellarmine
University, Campbellsville College, the Southern Baptist Theological
Seminary, and twenty-eight years of trumpet and music theory instruction
at the University of Louisville. In addition, Mr. Amend has conducted
the Louisville Contemporary Chamber Consort (1973-1975), the Musician’s
Union Summer Band (1986), and the Louisville Festival Symphony,
and has been Music Director of the Commonwealth Brass band since
1989. Mr. Amend has appeared as soloist with the LO on multiple
occasions and his work there regularly includes performances with
the Kentucky Grand Opera and Louisville Ballet.
TRUMPET
Jason Hougland received a B.A. in Music Performance from
Indiana University Southeast, where he studied with Jerry Amend,
principal trumpet of the Louisville Orchestra. He is currently a
member of the solo cornet section in the Commonwealth Brass Band
and the IUS Concert Band, and is co-principal trumpet in the IUS
Orchestra. Mr. Hougland also plays in local area churches, big bands,
and pit orchestras.
GUITAR
Tom Browning has been teaching guitar in the Louisville area for
thirty years, and has been on staff at Mel Owen since 1985. He has
studied under Nelson Keyes, Moritz Bomhard, Don Murray, and Jimmy
Raney, and holds an Associate of Arts degree in Music Theory and
Composition from Bellarmine University. Mr. Browning has played
with Bo Diddley, The Platters, The Drifters, and various groups
in and around Louisville and Boston. He currently plays with the
Merry Pranksters.
GUITAR
John Burgard is the most recent addition to the Mel Owen Music teaching
staff. Mr. Burgard has played throughout the United States, opening
for such notable bands as The Rolling Stones, The Doors, The Grateful
Dead, and ZZ Top. In Louisville, Mr. Burgard has played in various
blues bands, and has opened for BB King, John Mayall, Buddy Guy,
The Thunderbirds, and various others. Mr. Burgard has been teaching
for seven years, specializing in blues, blues-rock, and R&B.
GUITAR/BANJO/MANDOLIN
Bob Peters has been teaching guitar for over thirty-four years.
Mr. Peters studied guitar and music theory for six years with Don
Miller, a professional guitarist. He currently teaches guitar (rock/country/bluegrass),
Tenor/Plectrum bands (Dixieland), Five-String Banjo (Scrugg’s
Style) and Mandolin (Classical, Bluegrass). Mr. Peters accepts students
of all ages. Some of his students have performed on TV, radio, and
at state fair competitions.
TROMBONE/LOW BRASS
Eddie Clark
Private instructor since 1977. Served as clinician/instructor at
various colleges, high schools and workshops in Australia, Kentucky,
Georgia, New Jersey, New York and Texas. Has performed with Gil
Evans Orch., David Sanborn, Dr. John, Liza Minelli, Moody Blues,
Whitney Huston, Aretha Franklin, Trisha Yearwood among many others.
Performed with big bands and symphony orchestras around the country and
has extensive studio recording experience.
DRUM SET
Gary Underwood was ten years old when he began drum lessons with John Roy in Louisville. At seventeen, Gary went on the road for the next several years until Uncle Sam called him into service during the Viet Nam War, during which he was a member of the U.S. Army Band in Huntsville, AL. When he was discharged three years later, he attended Berklee School of Music in Boston. The next twenty years were spent on the road with various bands—his own and others. For the last ten years, Gary has been playing with the Impressions, with whom he has had the opportunity to play in the Apollo Theater in New York City and travel to Africa and Europe.
